Trying to find a college is becoming harder than I thought. Most all of these schools make you live on campus as a freshman. But they won’t let you have a car... Call me crazy but that’s a big deal to me...

Then take a bus or train....having a car will just encourage you to go home every weekend and miss out on the fun weekend shenanigans. Also you can friend upperclassmen who can chauffeur you atround . I may have been spoiled by going to school on the Washington DC metro line and could go anywhere without a car but still you’ll find you eoint drive the car much and parking ids annoying and expensive. Having a car should be very very low on your list of shit that matters when considering schools

My buddy goes to a college that doesn’t allow freshman to have cars, but he never actually needs one. He can take the bus or train wherever he needs (which is usually only to buy groceries). Honestly, I wouldn’t make a decision based solely on something so small. Just trudge through freshman year and then bring your car in.

My school had an all-freshman dorm with 6 parking spaces, but the school didn’t allow freshman to have cars.
For my sophomore year, I applied for one of those parking spaces and was denied because I was no longer a resident in that dorm.
Talk about a Catch 22.

Depending on where you go to school, parking within the town is always a possibility. I know at Stevens where I went, parking is extremely limited so only seniors could really get a spot for $300+ per semester. Since I lived in Hoboken, I just paid for city parking at a rate of $1 per day. I didn't really drive a whole lot but I did enjoy mountain biking quite a bit so having access to that on the weekends was worth it to me. Still, I certainly didn't bother freshman year though since NJ transit could get me home relatively easily and otherwise I stayed for the college experience. I wasn't really into cars then though so I think I might have a whole different perspective if I had my Miata then. Sometimes one of the best stress relievers at school was to just grab my car and drive for hours without reason. So I certainly feel you on that need! Certainly look into parking outside of the school, it really shouldn't be that difficult to accomplish.

Where I went, freshman had to live in dorms as well. This one smart guy claimed financial hardship and lived off-campus all four years. He had a huge apartment all to himself for much less than the school charged for dorms, and he street parked his car. It was such a small campus, distance wasn’t an issue. He had it all figured out.

Ohio State didn’t allow freshman to have cars on campus when I attended. I brought my car to school anyway. My solution was to just park it off campus. The difference between “campus” and “off campus” near my dorm was one street.

Everyone has different priorities for school. One of my things is to have a car.
I don’t want party schools. I don’t care how good public transportation is. I like my car. I want to keep my car.
My home is in Florida. I’m looking at schools in NJ area. Going home isn’t an option for the weekends.
Hell I wouldn’t live on campus if I didn’t. Have to.

If you’re paying for it, then do what you want. Don’t go to a university with no direction. That’s a massive waste of time and money. At a community college, you can try anything and find what you want. At a University, everything is major-locked. You can’t take XXXX classes, unless you’re an XXXX major.

Yeah, but I wouldn’t base a major decision like the choice of college on something which is temporary. That’s like not buying a nice house because the wallpaper is the wrong color. You only have to put up with it for a bit.

My Advice:
Befriend an upperclassman who’s eligible to register a vehicle in the parking lot you desire.
Ask them to register your car in their name.
The majority of schools I know of have a “no cars for freshmen” rule but from my experience, the freshmen I knew who had cars used this method to circumvent the rule. I even registered for one of my friends once.
Also, I don’t think you should factor freshman parking into your decisions. That first year will go by pretty quick and then it won’t matter.

I go to WVU and they don’t allow freshman to have cars. Didn’t stop me from parking my 300TD on a random street for a while. But the only time I drove was to go to the gym or just because I felt like driving. I think many schools don’t want to go through the hassle of providing extra parking for freshman. Honestly I think the majority of freshman can make due just fine without one. Unless you go home a lot or something. Having my car here made that easy.

Figure out what school you’re going to. Use the ultra-webs to find someone that lives off campus but close to campus is said town and offer them your parents hard earned money for their garage spot on a monthly basis... This is not a new policy by any stretch of the imagination. My school allowed Freshman to have cars but campus parking was brutally expensive. Worked for me.

I think it's a good idea room and board tend to be about $10,000 a year anyway that's why I chose a commuter college. A scholarship could help offset the cost but that's a lot of money.

Have you looked at the University of Alabama in Huntsville? They have a lot of programs, super nice dorms, and let you have a car on campus as a freshman.
The best part is their scholarship deals, even for out of state people. Above a 4.0 GPA, 33? ACT, and something good SAT, and the school will pay four years of tuition AND the room (which are really nice).

How do they require you to live on campus? Couldn’t you just find housing elsewhere and register technically as a commuter? You could always find someone with a house in the neighborhood and pay them to park in front of their house. Hell, maybe someone might even have extra garage space and you could work something out like change the oil on their cars in exchange for storage space lol. What schools in Jersey are you looking at? I am a local to the area.

I imagine that is definitely a school-specific policy. Many schools definitely allow commuters. Some even have more commuters than on-campus students. It sounds kind of silly to me to make having a car on campus a high priority. Keeping your car in general definitely makes sense though. Private schools can give some great funding. Even though tuition was higher than a state school, I actually ended up paying less due to the amount of aid given. What degree program are you looking for?

As a freshman in college now who isn’t allowed to have his car on campus, it sucks balls. I get free use of the bus whenever I want with my student ID, so getting around isn’t too hard. But I miss driving whenever I can. I miss heel-toeing. It sucks at first, but it gets better. Not sure where yo are, but I’m at UAlbany, if that helps. Good luck with the search!
